Chapter Fifteen

Curious, I slid my bag over my shoulder, made sure my phone was in my pocket, then walked toward the back door. I heard voices from off stage, and noticed Linda speaking with Bev. Ducking down behind a flat, I listened to what they said.

“Where was Sylvie?” Linda asked. “Don’t know,” Bev replied.

“I saw you out the other night with him, down at the bar and grill. Pracna on Main.”

I sucked in my breath, and covered my heart, knocking a table.

“Did you hear that?” “Someone’s listening.”

I sneaked away as fast as possible, and stay hidden by the back door. I didn’t want to rush out for fear that they’d follow and recognize me. I counted to one hundred and when no one came, I slipped out the door and raced to the car.

As I drove home, I glanced at the mentioned saloon. It was within a short distance from my house, and it caused me to wonder if it hadn’t been Russ who’d followed me the night? Or was it Bev? It could’ve been Sylvie. A full love triangle. One of the women could’ve easily thrust the knife into Russ’s

back. Jealousy and envy was a perfect and workable motive for murder.

How did Nancy work into the circle or was her murder completely separate?

I tended to believe it was and went on the premise that her murder had all to do with the script and nothing to do with a love triangle. She refused to edit her lines. Nancy was principled, and believed in the truth prevailing overall. There were those words— truth will prevail. It led me back to—where is what?

Nancy’s contact numbers were easily available in the store, so I gave her parents a phone call. I called Yellow Daisy Floral and asked to have an arrangement made ready for me.

I climbed into my car and headed toward Nancy’s parents’ house after picking up the flowers. At the knock on the door, her mother greeted me.

“Please accept my condolences,” I said. I handed her the spray of fresh summer flowers. I’m so sorry.” “Come in and have a seat, Liv. My husband isn’t

here at the moment.”

“IsuremissNancy.Shewasloyaland trustworthy.”

“Thank you. She liked working for you.”

“I haven’t seen any notifications in the paper for a funeral. What are your plans?”

“The paper has the information today. The funeral is day after tomorrow.”

“Thank you,” I said. I wondered how to continue, but decided that full-speed ahead was the best way.

“What can you tell me about her friends or theater people, boyfriends? I’m taking her place on stage.”

“Not much to tell. She got along with everyone. There was one person who annoyed her, and that was the guy who wanted to change her lines. That’s all that comes to mind.”

“Thank you. You’ve been helpful.”

I gave her a hug goodbye and condolences.

In the car, as I drove toward home, my thoughts were about Nancy. She was such a pleasant person and wasn’t easily annoyed. Who else had Russ annoyed to their limit?

I grabbed a bottle of soda from the refrigerator and nuked a couple pieces of cold pizza.
